I AM . . .
Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian. My passion for architecture and construction was realized during high school in Chicago, which set me on the path of a non-traditional career in the construction industry as a Black female. My journey of over 25 years shaped a woman full of grit and honor, and one whose purpose and commitment to advocating for women and people of color to succeed and prosper in the construction industry is unwavering. Rising from a foundation set in a city known for its rich architecture, culture, and its segregation, I joyfully admired beauty in the built environment as I repeatedly felt the painful ugliness of racism and discrimination from some of the white males who dominated my career path. I hold the memory of the moment a white project executive talked to the wall of the jobsite trailer to avoid making eye contact with me. I used the memory of that undignified act, and fragmented pieces of many others, to drive me as a trailblazer, voice, and force for positive change.
One of my powerful yet humble Black female mentors, who owned the construction company I worked for, anchored me in the value of being active in industry organizations such as the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). As a proud member and leader of Las Vegas NAWIC #74, I pledge the agility of my hands, the ability of my mind, and the integrity of my heart to help NAWIC be a positive influencer of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the construction industry.
